What do marketers do?

Our latest recruit at The Studio 4, Laura Gee has recently graduated from Keele University and is now learning how a degree in marketing differs to working for a marketing company. Read her first blog to find out how she is adapting to a career in SEO and social media.

The one question that University doesn’t actually teach you the answer to. They can teach you all the theory in the world, but one thing I’ve come to realise is that being a marketer isn’t something that can be taught. Of course, I highly value the education I received at University and found it worthwhile, but the real learning began when I started my job here at The Studio 4 two months ago. In fact, I strongly believe that marketers never stop learning.

A large part of my job as an SEO (search engine optimisation) and Social Media analyst involves writing optimised, user friendly, and engaging content for our client’s websites. While this sounds easy in theory, to write about something correctly, you actually have to understand what it is you’re writing about. This can be difficult when you have clients in a variety of industries as The Studio 4 does. Since starting here I’ve developed knowledge in industries I previously knew nothing about such as architecture, construction and motoring. What do marketers do

The thing that surprised me most since starting my marketing career, is that it is so much more than a 9-5 job. Keeping up to date with global news, events and trends is a massive part of the job because you are not able to write engaging social posts for your clients if you don’t know what people are talking about on a daily basis. Being aware of both local and global events as well as general news is vital to know what impact this could have on your clients and their company.

Another aspect that is important for my role at The Studio 4 is knowing and building relationships with my clients. Knowing the requirements and needs of your clients is essential, for example our PR Account Managers need to know what features are coming up in architectural magazines that would be of interest to their clients. As a SEO and Social Media Analyst I need to know what type of keywords are suitable as well as what social media posts my clients will be happy with. Being able to switch from client to client at a moment’s notice is a key skill of a marketer, and one that I am continuing to develop myself.

So then, what do marketers do? Learn, research, learn some more, develop and maintain client relationships and communicate, and that’s all in a day’s work!
